Beginning January 1st, 2012 paper U.S. Savings Bonds will no longer be sold at banks and credit unions. If you would like to buy Savings Bonds after December, 31st you will need to buy them electronically through www.treasurydirect.gov, a Web-based program offered by Treasury’s Bureau of Public Debt. Savers Bank will stop selling them on December 24th, 2011.
The shift from paper to electronic Savings Bonds is expected to save the government $70 million over the next five years.
